How to Prepare Your Car for Idaho Winter

Freezing temps, black ice on US-93, and mountain passes to Ketchum require more than good tires. The pre-winter checklist Pablo runs on every car he owns.

Idaho winters range from mild in Twin Falls to brutal in the Wood River Valley. If you drive to Sun Valley or through Bliss Grade — your car needs to be ready.

Battery: Cold weather is the number one battery killer. A battery that tests at 75% capacity in September may fail to start at 15°F in January. We test batteries for free — replace anything below 80% CCA before November.

Coolant/antifreeze: Check the freeze point with a refractometer or test strip. Standard 50/50 mix protects to -34°F. If your coolant is more than 5 years old, flush and replace it.

Tires: All-season tires work for Twin Falls winters. If you drive Highway 75 to Ketchum regularly, consider dedicated winter tires. Check tread depth — anything below 4/32" is unsafe in snow.

Brakes: If your pads are marginal, winter is when they'll fail you. Stopping distances on black ice are 10x normal.

Wipers and washer fluid: Use washer fluid rated for at least -20°F — summer fluid freezes on contact with a cold windshield.
