AC Not Blowing Cold? Common Causes and Fixes in Southern Idaho
When it's 104°F on Addison Ave and your AC gives out, here's what's likely wrong — and whether you need a recharge, a leak fix, or a compressor replacement.
Southern Idaho summers are no joke. Twin Falls regularly hits 100°F in July and August. When your AC stops working, it's a comfort issue that quickly becomes a safety issue.
Most common cause: Low refrigerant from a slow leak AC systems don't consume refrigerant. If yours is low, there's a leak somewhere. Recharging without fixing the leak just means you're back in the same spot in 6–12 months. We locate leaks with UV dye and a leak detector.
Second most common: Failed compressor The compressor is the heart of the AC system. When it fails, you get no cooling at all. Signs: loud clicking or squealing when the AC is engaged, or the clutch not engaging. Compressor replacements run $400–$800 depending on the vehicle.
Other causes: - Blend door actuator stuck in heat position (warm air always, even on full cold) - Condenser damage from road debris - Evaporator freeze-up from a clogged drain tube - Electrical fault in the AC pressure switch or relay
At Jr's, an AC diagnostic and inspection starts at $85. We check pressures on both the high and low sides, inspect the compressor clutch, check for leaks, and test the blower system. Most repairs can be completed same-day.
